Our third Congress!!!

May 18th was the final congress PIIISA in Granada.
Congratulations!!!, we have got the satisfaction to have passed all the steps in a PIIISA project:
Doubts, research, the study, the work, the “frustation”, the exams (of the secondary course), and of course the Award!!!.
The reward and the convinction to have participated in something unforgettable and very, very , very special.
The students (Carmen, Matilde, Cristina, Lucía, Alba y Paula with the researcher) with the Poster in the Sciences Faculty.

Panoramic vision of the auditorium in Granada Sciences. As usual, impressive!! isn’t it?

Now, we can only assess the work done and to breath, and to extend our marvelous experience everywhere: friends, classmates, teachers, uncles and cousins, grandfathers, …
Again, congratulations to All, and Success in the Final Exams but…
Be aware… It is possible that the story has not end yet!!!

We got it!!!

Hi All:

Yesterday Congress was fantastic, exciting, serious and cheerful at once. All the project performed in the CSIC and Granada were exposed.  I could confirm the quality of some of the projects: how to program a rover to think by itself, how measure the damage in the DNA of cancer cells (comet assays), how analyze interesting qualities of bacteria isolated from oils seeds, …). We were the third of the talks (it was programed to be the second but…). It was fantastic. Of course there were nervous, and it was not exactly as we programed in our assays. But it was fantastic (again).

All the students except Monica (Matilde, Carmen, Cristina, Alba, Lucía y Paula with the researcher) with the Poster.
The auditorium in the IPBLN-CSIC was full

One of the Moments in our fantastic exposition.
We got it. But, now we have to extend our speechs in your IES centers. We must engage our classmates, teachers, friends  we feel lucky to participate in this fantastic Project.
We must thank to all who organize the incredible PIIIISA congress of yesterday.
Hip, hip hurra!!!

In two words: "Im presionante"

On 27th of April, our communication was present in the First Interprovince Congress of PIIISA Projects held in Malaga. But, only in the book of abstracts (http://piiisaandalucia.blogspot.com.es/) in last page: communication 49.

This congress inspired to teachers, researchers students of different Secondary schools, Universities, Engineering, and Research Centers of all over Andalucia, except Granada. Every attendant of the meeting could note the nervous, the doubts and the happiness of all students after oral expositions of their communications.
Full General auditorium to listen Professor Gines Morata (Premio Principe de Asturias 2007) Yesterday 27th of April Malaga.
There were easy and difficult questions from other students, teachers or researchers in all sessions. All the communications have their opportunity, except ours; it was a pity. And it was a nice opportunity lost, because, a PIIISA project without students is not a PIIISA project.
Anyway, PIIIISA must go on. We have next appointments to show and demonstrate what we did and how we did!!! We have to acknowledge to Javier Caceres, the real promoter of this project, for giving us the opportunity to participate (at least in the documents) of this incredible Meeting.
Come on 2e Team.
Hip hip Hurra!!!!

April-May

The critical final months of every PIIISA Project are already here.

First, and after considering all we made during this course, we finished a Summary of our work for the first of the meetings held in Malaga on 27th of April.

Fig 1: Abstract of the Congreso General PIIISA 2016 Málaga

This Abstract will included in the Congress Book in the First PIIISA meeting of this year.
Fig 2: Announcement of Malaga Congress (27th April 2016)
It is our first communication in one of the PIIISA congress of this year. Unfortunately, as it is mentioned in the document, we are not going to assist in to this congress. However, the summary and probably the Poster will be included in all the documents.
In addition, Yesterday (20th of April), we practised as a first time, our oral presentation (see in resources the first draft of the slides).
We considered all the facts, and understand  the importance of any presentation is that the audience know our work, what we alredy did!!!.
In the Speech, people has to be aware what we are telling but not how we are telling.
We analyzed all the slides, corrected some of them and calculating more or less the time of exposition. We also elaborated a script for the whole presentation and practise to be in the right time for the exposition: 7-8 min. After practising several folds (3-4 times), we adquired confidence to give a nice speech clarifing what we made and the real conclussions we present of our project. At the end, also several putative questions were studied in order to expect which could be… . In my experience never occurs as we planify but…

Several things are still pending: the final poster structure, and the final manuscript: proceedings. Remember the deadlines!!!

Do not forget:
-22th April. Dead line for my own ideas…
-Thursday 5th of May. First congress; it will be held on IPBlN-CSIC (http://www.ipb.csic.es/)

Preparing our first oral presentation

Last day (4th of April) was a strange day… Only talking, only thinking, only deciding what order of the three important tasks we are conducting: manuscript, poster and finally the oral presentation… . However, after the whole session we found out we did not miss our time.
Thus,

-The structure of the Poster has been decided; photographs.

-Also the main scaffold of the oral presentation.

-And all the figure legends and how the reader must reach to our conclussions of the work in the manuscript.

Yes!!!,  we have a plan; and only the final steps remain to be completed.

On a Next and decissive appoinment we must conclude we are perfectly prepared to astonish to a general audience about our fantastic project which has transformed us.

Students at the begining; just arrive to the lab (November 2015).

Students current state: experts in a microbiology lab.

On the other hand,  it would be highly recommended that you visit the following video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DE5fid23nlM&feature=youtu.be (min 16:25-22:50)
It is a good example how we can do it!!!. Come on it will be a fantastic ending of our project.

Hip, hip Hurra!!.

Do not forget:
Important dates:
Next session: Thurday 21th April at 16:30. Salon de Actos EEZ.
22th April. Dead line for my own ideas…
Thursday 5th of May. First congress; it will be held on IPBlN-CSIC (http://www.ipb.csic.es/)

Last Results, First Conclusions

Hi Team!!!
Again, last session dealt with our favourite activity: “Counting colonies”, isn’t it??
Of course, we did more things!!!. We get it our last (final) result (sumarizes on  table 1).

Table 1: bacterial colony counting of the last two experiments. Dilutions (-4)-(-6) correspond total colonies on TY Km plates; Dilutions (1) to (-1) correspond total colonies on TY Km, Sac plates.

When we use those data to get the graphic of uv effect on bacterial growth; we decide to not consider the data on 3G bacteria plates. It is probably some error  in the dilution protocol performed with this particular isolate. However, a nice and reproducible uv effect on bacterial culture can be observed in the experiments I and II (3I bacterium isolate). From those data we can obtain our results and conclusions of our project (see Figure 1).

Figure 1: Effect of uv treatment on (A) bacterial growth and (B) mutation frequency of S. meliloti bacteria.

All of us must be able to obtain the numbers of this figures based on table 1; understand their meaning and of course understand which are our conclusions:
  1. We demonstrate S meliloti growth is sensitive to uv treatments
  2. Uv treatments does not increase the mutation frequency in S. meliloti.
  3. We cannot discard a putative effect on the type of mutation generated.
Now we have to:
  1. Put the figure legend on all figures of the work: (see in resouces Figures) see examples on previous PIIISA manuscripts.
  2. Think in the my own ideas section.
Based on our work: manuscript (proceedings), Poster and Oral presentation must be designed.
Come on!!! we almost touching the end of this great adventure!!!!
